Rice Called Human Rights Council « A Disaster »
L’ancienne Secrétaire d’Etat Condoleeza Rice prétend que le conseil des droits de l’homme des Nations Unies est « un désastre » et « ne considère pas l’organisation comme active ».
D’après un câble diplomatique (08STATE100219), quand l’ambassadeur d’Espagne Jorge Dezcallar demanda à Condoleeza Rice s’il pourrait compter sur le soutien des États-Unis pour que l’Espagne obtienne un siège au conseil des droits de l’homme aux Nations Unies,
Rice admit que « les États-Unis ne sont pas actifs au sein du conseil et ne voient pas cette organisation comme active ».Lorsqu’il réitéra sa requête pour obtenir le soutien des États-Unis, elle déclara ce qui suit
Les États-Unis ne voteront peut-être pas du tout depuis qu’elle a considéré le conseil comme étant « un désastre ».
En prenant en considération le fait que Rice soutenait la consécration de la torture illégale sous l’administration Bush en dépit de l’attitude des Nations Unies sur les droits de l’homme, sa réaction ne semble pas surprenante.

Rice is merely being realistic. The fact is that, despite « human rights » in the name of this council, its members could not care less about actual human rights, such as rights of women, gays, and non-Moslems in Islamic states, rights of dissidents in Cuba, China, and Russia, and so on.

Not even half of a year later, in her speech to the United Nations Security Council on 29.01.2009 Rice boasted the USA’s commitment to human rights:
“The United States is steadfast in its commitment to safeguard human rights and end violations of international humanitarian law, both in conjunction with the United Nations and through our other efforts throughout the world,…
Beyond this commitment, however, is a pledge by the United States to work together with the United Nations and international organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, in a new era in support for international humanitarian law,”.
